Water use is usually defined and measured in terms of withdrawal or consumption-in other words, when water is taken up or when it is used up. Withdrawal refers to when water is collected from the Earth's surface or extracted from ground water. Consumption refers to the part of a withdrawal that does not go back into the water table. Instead, this water is removed from the water table though natural processes such as evaporation, transpiration (evaporation through plants), and animal consumption. Man-made consumption of water includes water export for commercial purposes and wastewater discharge outside the water table, from which it was withdrawn.
